We’ve all heard how carrots are beneficial to our eyesight and how wearing glasses for long periods of time can be damaging to our vision. With the current digital landscape, misleading information can most definitely cause a blur between what is true and what is not. So, who wants to have a little fun? At Befitting we see things differently, and we’re excited to show you how. Today we’re chatting about all things eye health and the incredible facts and myths you need to see to believe. Let’s put on our thinking caps and do this!
We’ve all heard many theories about newborn babies and their eyes. From color to size, we have all the answers you’ll need. Many claim that all babies are born with blue eyes. Most of us would likely protest this claim. When babies are born their eyes often do appear blue, but this is due to the lack of melanin present at birth. Melanin is the substance that develops our eye, hair, and skin pigmentation. During our first year of life, melanin is produced, and the iris will collect the color-changing agent. The more melanin present, the darker the eye will be. So, the tale of blue eyes is 100% one of fiction. No real surprises here but eye size could be a different story.
It is commonly thought that babies are born with their eyes full-size. This could indeed be an easily acceptable theory considering how big and beautiful these bouncing beauties appear when they look at us. Factually, we are born with our eyes only two-thirds of our full adult size. Eyes do continue to grow after birth in two phases. One being the first few years of life and the second is during the wonderous journey through puberty. #TheMoreYouKnow
What’s up doc? Well, if you’re like most of us, you grew up with the motivational suggestion that eating carrots is not only good for our eyes but can also improve our eyesight. It IS true that vitamin A is required to maintain healthy eyesight and YES, carrots have remarkably elevated levels of this nutrient. However, our bodies only require low levels of vitamin A for vision support which is also accessible through a variety of foods such as leafy greens, bright vegetables, dairy, and fish. Even then, these foods will support overall vision-health, but they will not improve it or keep us from the potential of needing to wear glasses. Overall, not the worst myth out there and one mom’s do endorse with good intent.
I personally have been told by more than one friend that wearing my readers when not reading would worsen my eyesight and admittedly, this seemed very plausible to me. It was not until an optometrist appointment that this myth was debunked. Like reading in dim light or spending too much time on the computer without a break, the key is to give our eyes the proper breaks and rest to not over strain, but our vision will not be affected, nor do we increase any chance of eye disease.
Remember when we were kids, and we would want to be as close to the action as we possibly could while watching our favorite TV program? Without fail, this would always result in a fear-filled scolding to sit back, or we would damage our eyes. Of course, being young and tirelessly obeying our parents, we would not only oblige but would often think twice about getting that close again. Never underestimate the power of a solid scare tactic. Remarkably similar to the previous point, eye strain can result in a headache, but our vision would not be damaged. The point of interest here, however, should be if someone does routinely sit closer to the television, this could indicate the person is nearsighted and may need glasses. Nothing an appointment with your local optometrist cannot fix!
If you leave with anything from this blog, we hope that if you hear anything about eye health that strikes you as odd, even if just a little, you know it’s always best to do a little research to uncover the facts yourself. ‘The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes’. – Marcel Proust.
We hope to see you soon, friends!
