When you are on the market for a new pair of eyeglasses, you think a lot about the types of frames that you want to get. Aviator, wire, or tortoiseshell to name a few Your eye doctor will also be able to recommend which lenses will be the best for enhancing
your vision. For example, if basic plastic lenses will be fine or if you should be considering a thinner polycarbonate or high index type, which might be the best option for higher prescriptions....
However, once you have chosen your frames and lenses, there are even more options to consider regarding the lens coatings. Each type will come with its own set of properties, from light reduction to scratch resistance. Some of these coatings
are strictly cosmetic, however, depending on what your vision needs are, others might help improve your comfort and safety. While some coatings could come with your eyeglass package price, others might add an additional charge to your
eyewear. So how do you know which lens coatings are the right choice for you so you can be sure you are getting the best value? Your eye doctor could give you a few suggestions, however in general, these are ultimately personal decisions.
One size does not fit all when it comes to lens coatings. In order to help you go through the most common choices, here is some top advice from vision industry experts.
Anti-reflective
Anti-reflective coating, also called AR or anti-glare, is usually applied to both sides of the lens. The purpose is to help reduce the amount of light reflected off the surface of the lens and
can help enhance contrast in specific environments. This means you will get the maximum amount of light in the environment that you are in, however, it will be free from any visual interference which can come from the light bouncing
off your glasses. Sounds like an awesome option to us!
Scratch-resistant
This coating will help make your glasses less susceptible to scratching if you accidentally drop them or clean them using an abrasive cloth. Most glasses would not last very long without this
type of coating, as polycarbonate and high index lenses are made from softer materials. This is definitely a ‘we told you so’ moment!
UV protective
As time goes on and we age, the sun’s UV rays can contribute to vision problems like cataracts or retinal damage. Many eyeglass lenses do have UV protection built in but most like to have the option
to buy additional treatments to have 100 percent protection.
Tinted
With this type of lens, dyes are applied to the lenses to help cut down on the visible light that is entering the eye. This does not necessarily apply to UV rays. The hues will range from light tints to
pastel blue or pink, to more deeper shades for use with sunglasses.
A large amount of food-related research has shown a very strong connection between food and overall health. There is fast-growing evidence that supports the idea that certain vitamins and minerals in different foods will fuel your body in a healthy way
as well as protect your vision for life. We thought this was worth looking into. ...
Vitamins A, C, and E or (ACE) are the best vitamins when it comes to maintaining healthy vision. Studies show that this combination of vitamins plus zinc is key when lowering the risk of advanced (AMD-what exactly is AMD?). This is yet another reason to develop good eating habits and to consume the right nutrients. Here are some simple ways you can stay healthy and care for your vision at the same time.
Foods That Will Help Keep Your Eyes and Body In Great Shape
Nature can provide you with all you need in terms of energy and vision protection. You can get the most out of what you eat by consuming a large variety of colourful produce rich in antioxidants. You can kick your nutritional intake up a notch by choosing foods that contain selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, alpha-lipoic acid, and omega-3 fats. Throw these foods together in a colourful salad or steam a few vegetables as a healthy side dish or bring along some fresh fruit or veggies to snack on during the day.
Bell Peppers
Bell peppers that are bright in colour are a nutritional powerhouse that can help you reduce the risk of getting prostate cancer and help prevent age-related macular degeneration. Eating only one cup of bell peppers gives you 100% of the recommended daily dose of vitamins A and C. In addition, bell peppers are fat-free, low calorie, and contain three grams of fibre per cup. Plus, they can help make you feel fuller faster and can help you curb your hunger. Sounds like a lot of wins to us!
Carrots
What’s up Dock? Carrots are a highly portable snack that contains tonnes of vitamin A. Several studies have shown that vitamin A, C and E help reduce the impact of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Eat them with a salad, dip them into hummus or munch on them by themselves to benefit from these vitamins brought to you by carrots.
Spinach, Kale, And Other Dark, Leafy Veggies
We know! Some of these words can be a little scary but please do read on. Dark, leafy greens like spinach are packed full of vitamin C, beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These types of antioxidants protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. You can eat these greens in salads, steamed or mixed into a low-calorie dip to scoop up with some celery or carrot sticks. Yes, we said dip so DIG IN!
Sweet Potatoes
Like carrots, bright orange sweet potatoes are a great source of beta caroteneYou can make getting your vitamins more fun by cutting up your sweet potato into thin strips, drizzle with a bit of oil and roasting them in the oven with your choice of spices to enjoy some homemade sweet potato fries. In essence, we just suggested some fries for your eyes.
Bon appetite.
There are many reasons to limit your child’s screen time. From encouragement to play outdoors and have a healthy level of activity, to helping foster better sleeping habits, and also helping promote the development of social relationships. Eye health
is another key reason to limit your child’s screen time which of course carries over to our own...
With more and more of our lives bring focused on our mobile devices and computer screens, how parents set better and more realistic time goals for their children can be a challenge. There are many risks of too much screen time on your child’s vision and familiarizing yourself can help them practice healthier habits.
Fatigue
Eye fatigue, also known as asthenopia, includes eye discomfort, dimness of vision, and headaches. It can be caused by prolonged focus on screens, and any glare from a screen can cause further strain on the eyes. Children who experience eye fatigue might complain about their head hurting or having eye pain or headaches. They may also start to lose interest in reading and their studies as a result.
One more issue is that kids focus intensely on the games they play or videos they watch, which can add to fatigue due to prolonged close-focus. Eyes need breaks from close-up focus, but kids can lose track of time when they are fully immersed in what they are doing. Device time outs and real-time play sessions are imperative to set into daily routines for eye and overall health benefits.
Irritated, dry eyes
We all know that itchy, scratchy feeling! Eyes can become irritated and dry when we strain our eyes for an extended period of time. Studies show that people across all ages blink less when focusing on a screen, which causes the eyes to dry out. Our eyes require a clear and stable film to stay healthy and have good vision. This problem can be worse for kids who strain their eyes to view a screen that’s not positioned properly.
Nearsightedness
Kids typically use their mobile devices inside, even though adequate exposure to natural light sources is crucial for healthy eye development. Kids need to spend time outdoors for their natural health progression. Studies show that children that spend more time indoors are more likely to develop myopia (nearsightedness). Researchers believe that UV light plays a significant role in good eye development. The rate of nearsightedness found in children has increased dramatically in the last few decades. Pull out the gloves and grab the ball! It's time for a little catch sesh.
Impact on sleep
This one goes for you too, Screen time impacts not only vision health, but disturbs our sleep as well. The excitement caused by playing games or watching the news can wind us up and make it difficult to relax and get ready for bedtime. Research also shows that the blue light coming from screens can alter the brain’s sleep rhythm, and the brain shifts into thinking that it is still daytime. Something my family does is gather in our living room half hour before bed to chat about our day. It’s the perfect way to disconnect from our devices and connect with our loved ones before we call it a night. Sweet dreams everyone…
Who’s ready to play some ball? In the past, athletes rarely wore special eyewear designed to protect their eyes from sports-related injuries even though eye injuries were a widespread phenomenon. However, in today’s sports, protective sports eyewear can
be seen on anyone who decides to pick up a ball or bat,...
whether they are playing in the little or major leagues.
Many coaches, parents, and players now understand how important it is to wear protective eyewear to play sports. The risk of injury is significantly reduced. A player’s ability to perform is enhanced because of their ability to see better. Many athletic and fitness clubs do not permit their members to participate without checking for proper eye gear.
In the past, there was resistance from children to wear eyewear because they thought it might make them look different from others. However, many sports professionals who protect their eyes have become a positive influence and one to emulate. Many children and adults now pride themselves on wearing modern sports eyewear as it showcases their dedication to safety in the sport.
If you are not yet riding the sports eyewear protection wave, then consider hospital rooms treat over 40,000 sports related eye injuries each year.. Any sport that includes balls, racquets, or flying objects present a risk and potential for eye injuries. For example, the ball can travel up to 140 mph or faster in racquetball or tennis. Now that’s some major speed our eyes should never have to contend with!
Some pitchers can throw the ball up to 100 mph or faster in professional baseball. The fastest bowls can move a ball 93 mph or faster in cricket. Even sports like badminton can result in significant eye injury. Another potential danger is the racquets or bats, which can move at high speeds in a confined space and strike any player.
Flying objects are far from the only hazard in sports. Many eye injuries are caused by pokes and jabs from fingers and elbows, usually in games where players need to be in close contact with one another. It should come as no surprise that basketball has a high rate of eye injury.
Features You Should Look for When Purchasing Protective Sports Eyewear
Prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and even industrial safety glasses will usually not give you enough protection during sports. Goggles are made in many different shapes and sizes. and most are designed specifically for a particular sport, including racquet sports, basketball, or soccer. There are even products for football, hockey, and baseball.
Lenses used for sports eyewear are typically made from polycarbonate as it’s an impact-resistant lens material. It works very well to protect the eyes from various objects and speeds. Polycarbonate is also lightweight and has built-in UV ray protection, a valuable feature for playing sports.
We hope that you’re as inspired as we are to protect those peepers both on and off the field. FORE!
